Can a strategic plan help your nonprofit? Many nonprofits think it can’t. They think that external circumstances make it impossible to plan for anything.
This is a very disempowering thought.
And very unhealthy for everyone involved in this work.
And totally against anything I believe about nonprofits.
Because for me, nonprofits are THE role model of taking your own destiny in your own hands. Taking power. Gaining control of the things that are wrong. In order to create a better version of our world and societies.
And that’s when you need a plan. And a strategic approach to create a clever plan that defines your vision, harnesses your strengths and uses opportunities that present themselves. A plan that also helps you be ready for anything that might get in your way.
Because of course we never know what will happen for sure.
But if you invest some time in creating a good strategic plan you’ll have some well-founded ideas of what might happen. And with these, you can prepare for worst case scenarios.
And you’ll see that if you’re prepared, their impact is much less disruptive. Because, in a way, they’re part of your clever plan already.
So, yes, anything can happen. But it pays off to have a strategic plan, because you’ll no longer be taken by surprise and can simply move to plan b, or c, or d…
